The Final Push to Eradicate Polio
August 29, 2024#LessonsFromParenting that inspire my everyday motivation and the creation of effective working teams come from my experiences with my 14-year-old daughter, a passionate #cyclist.
As I marvel at how skilled she has become, mastering bicycle handling better than I ever could, it’s clear she’s currently the fastest female rider on her team. Watching her, you see a picture of confidence, focus, and prowess on the bike.
Yet, behind the scenes, there’s much more than meets the eye. What you don’t see are the sacrifices, the scars, the combined effort of all the people supporting her journey, the resources, and the immense dedication required to reach her current status. Her passion for riding and her dream of becoming a professional rider in the future are the driving forces.
What amazes me is that, as a child, she was adamant about not wearing attire associated with the male gender. Despite societal stereotypes and discouragement, particularly for girls, she pursued her passion with unwavering resolve.
In growing my career to leadership roles in the corporate world and now assembling a team for my foundation, I apply lessons learned from parenting to create and nurture talent. Here are a few insights:
#1. Open-Minded Leadership: As a leader, embracing diversity and being open-minded is crucial. The least likely person might be your strongest asset in a team.
#2. Building Winning Teams: Success doesn’t happen overnight. It requires a blend of resources, sacrifice, time, and teamwork. A strong team builds other strong teams.
#3. Individual Passion: The passion of each team member is crucial for collective success, even within a team setting.
#4. Patience and Resilience: Patience is vital. Failing is part of the journey for both teams and leaders. Adapting and adjusting group dynamics are key to achieving desired outcomes.
I also invite those in Dar es Salaam to join us in promoting bicycle riding for children and youth. 🚴♂️🚴♀️ It’s a wonderful way to foster physical fitness, mental well-being, and environmental awareness while supporting a bicycle club that promotes inclusion in sports and education.
